out of place?

We are launching a new initiative that brings art out of the university and into the city. Through the use of commercial advertising space on public Litfaßsäulen (poster pillars), we want to occupy space with art beyond the university walls.

Each semester, we will explore a topic that is socially engaged, political, or current through a series of posters displayed in public space. The initiative is open to everyone at the university, regardless of department, background, or artistic experience.

For our first edition we invite you to respond to the theme: out of place? What does it mean to feel out of place? To be displaced, excluded, or made to feel that you do not belong?

We invite you to explore questions of belonging, displacement, and exclusion in relation to public space and society. What does it mean to have a place in Vienna or Austria? How do migration, war, repression, or racism shape our experiences of belonging? Which traditions and identities are represented in public space, and which are pushed to its margins? What constitutes a place and what does it mean to be outside of it?

We are interested in works that create friction, challenge familiar narratives, or open up unexpected perspectives. What happens when something appears where it is not expected to be? What kind of dialogue can emerge from this tension?

You are encouraged to experiment with the form of the Litfaßsäule itself: its shape, its visibility, its history or its presence in the city.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

The open call is open to everyone at the university, across all departments and disciplines. All artistic mediums and  experiences are welcome. The only requirement is that your work can be presented as a poster in public space.

This is a non-commercial, non-paid initiative.
